If you play a guitar you will know that sometimes when you are practicing you stumble across a chord sequence or a riff which you like the sound of. Often it is just a group of chords which you like the sound of when they are played in a sequence you have just made up. This is the beginning of writing a song. This songwriting journal is the perfect book to write your thoughts and chord sequences down. Suitable for beginner or advanced songwriters.

How to write and compose a guitar song.

You can write a song on guitar using as little as three chords. So how do you begin? How do you write a song?

A song has parts which are repeated through out. Start with an intro cord sequence, this could be on chord strummed in a pattern. The intro leads into a verse. The verse could be two or 3 chords in a certain pattern. The verse leads to a chorus. The chorus is catchy and repetitive. The chorus will lead into another verse and then maybe an outro and end.

Chord Progression

A lot of the 60’s songs were written using 3 chords. Look at the transpose key sheet and the cycle of 4th and 5ths and find the 3 chords from the key you like playing in.  The chords are the 1st or Root, fourth and the 5th. I, IV, V eg C, F and G or G7

How to work on a tune.

Using the 3 chords of your choice, play around with them by playing them in different orders to make a tune. Write them down in the order you like.

Get the guitar songwriting lyrics going

It is easier to write lyrics if you have a topic or subject. Lots of no 1 hits were written using relationships as the basis for the lyrics. Write down a few ideas, see how they slot in with your chosen chord sequence and you have a song.
