Tranquil Kirkcudbright Seaward Holiday Park

A four night stay at Seaward Holiday Park in Kirkcudbright was perfect. This tranquil site overlooks the Solway Firth with views of Little Ross Island. The area is really not for those who want  lots of exciting things to do. It is perfect for walks, exploring and just relaxing. Being quite close to Stranraer one could adventure across the sea to spend a day or two in Ireland. Loch Ryan Port, Cairnryan is located in Dumfries and Galloway. This is one site that we could not find any negatives at all. The wardens are top notch and managed the site very well.

Is the Solway Firth Tidal At Dhoon Bay?

Yes, the Solway is tidal, the tides can be found on the dhoon tide website. This makes for interesting shipping. We saw a lot of sailing vessels leave and return to Kirkcudbright. The channel is very well marked during the day and it lights up wonderfully during the night. The small and large fishing vessels also leave and return on the tides. We did see a few sailing vessels get stuck on the mud flats but after a short wait, they were able to sail off as the tide came in. This was a very enjoyable activity whilst sitting out doors enjoying the peace.

Is Dhoon Bay a place to explore?

Seaward Holiday Park is within easy walking distance to the main Dhoon beach area. This area has a lovely large grassed picnic and parking area with direct walking access to the beach. There are toilets on this site, but, it is not for overnighting in a campervan. The beach itself has rocky outcrops as well as a sandy shore. There is the remains of the wreck ” Monreith” in the dhoon beach bay. There are no real shells or sea glass to collect. The shore has pebbles and seaweed but no real treasures, so not a treasure hunters beach.

What is the small island which has a Lighthouse on called?

At the exit of the channel to the sea is a small island which has a light house on it. The 29 acre island is called Little Ross, and the lighthouse has a story connected by a murder. The working lighthouse tower was designed and built by Alan Stevenson and first lit 1843. It was fully automated in 1961 after the murder. The island went up for sale in 2017, and is now owned by St Mary Estate Isle. It can only be reached by sea or air.

There are other beaches, small historical places which are very interesting, excellent view points around the coast line. There is a walled garden owned by Elizabeth McGregor which is free to visit. It has a wonderful walled garden and a small nursery with excellent plants for you to purchase.  Logan Botanical garden is about an hours drive away near Stranraer and is also worth a visit if you are exploring.
