Tremendous Coastline Haven Thornwick Bay

Haven Thornwick Bay has a wonderful scenic coastline. There is a coastal path from Thornwick Bay to Flamborough Cliffs and lighthouses, up to the Bempton cliff RSPB Station. This blog is about our stay at the Haven Holiday Touring Park at Thornwick Bay. If you are interested in walking the cliff tops, watching birds, stargazing or just enjoying what the site offers, then this is the perfect place. The sea birds nest from mid April and fill the cliff faces as they all nest and hatch their young. This trip was later and so we did not see any nesting birds.

Summary Review of Haven Thornwick Bay

The Touring site:

  • Touring site is large and has place for all size tourers and campervans.
  • There is a large tent only field for all those who like camping.
  • The ablutions are simple, clean buildings with toilets, wash basins and showers. No modern family bathrooms however they do have hairdryers.
  • Handy water points around the site.
  • There are Elsan points and places for grey water.
  • Plenty of washing up sinks.
  • On site they have a laundrette, rubbish bin facilities and a place to replace your gas bottles.
  • The pitches are all on grass with electric connection.

Haven Thornwick Bay entertainment and eating out:

  • Entertainment centre, offering shows and amusements.
  • Archery, football factory, cycle hire, segways, boating, paddle boards, climbing wall and swimming. They also have creative sessions for the family.
  • There are several eating places including fish and chips, Asian cuisine takeaway, ice cream van, restaurant and bar.
  • Onsite there is a small shop which stocks all you need and more.
  • Take a walk to the Bay and have tea or lunch at the café.

We found the site had a good mix of things to do and lots of good dog walks as well as access to the Cliffs.

The negatives are that it all looks well used. The roads are in poor shape in places but everything is still clean and tidy.

Will we visit Haven Thornwick Bay site again?

Yes, although we do not use the entertainment centre, we like the walks and the scenery. Our stay was quiet and the weather was perfect.

Information about the area

  • There is a nature reserve along the Flamborough Cliffs which become packed with thousands of breeding auks, gannets, gulls and puffins, throughout the Spring.
  • Flamborough has a new lighthouse as well as an older one. Both are worth a visit as there are coastal paths along the Cliffs with breathtaking views and interesting rock formations. It is a bird and seal watching area. There is a café and parking area.
  • This area is on a sticky out bit on the map, and so it has a North Sea and a South sea. They call it the North Landing and South Landing beaches.
  • Thornwick Bay is on the North side and has plenty of sea caves to explore. The notice boards show you can find fossils in the chalk stone.
  • The whole area is generally a beauty spot  with great walks and views of the coastline.

What outdoor activities we enjoyed at Haven Thornwick Bay.

We took our bicycles and were able to cycle around the site as well as down to North Landing beach and Thornwick Bay.

The Cliffs have walks down to the beaches at both North Landing and Thornwick Bay. The steps and paths are not suitable for anyone who is unfit, or infirm, as they are fairly steep and depending on the weather, can be slippery.

Going onto the beaches gives you a wonderful totally secluded feeling. There are sea caves on many of the surrounding Cliffs and one can only think of stories surrounding smuggling and bootlegging. The rocks on these beaches are also interesting, sign boards tell us you can find fossils in them.

Walking the coastal path from Haven Thornwick Bay to Bempton RSPB

  • The pathway can be very up and down in places if you start your costal path walk from the access route near the entertainment centre. This is also near to the Thornwick Bay Café.
  • We found that from the touring site, there is an access route through the hedge above the tent field. This path is wider and goes through farmlands making it an easy walk to the very top of the pathway. It only has one very short incline the rest is sort of level.
  • It joins the pathway at a well sign posted sign, so it is easy to find on your way back.
  • The total distance there and back to the RSPB is around 7.5km.

This is just a bit of what there is to see, the whole Flamborough area including Bridlington has lots to offer. A good place to have a break. !!
