Downloadable sewing projects suitable for a beginner or advanced sewist. These are tutorials I put together a few years ago for my sewing blog. Perfect to learn how to sew, great ideas for gifts.

The sewing machine need to sew these projects should…

1. Be able to do a straight stitch which varies in length from 1 – 4.
2. Have a zig zag stitch to finish edges and stop fabric from fraying.

Nice-to-Have Options : A built-in needle threader is helpful if vision and dexterity are a concern, or if you plan to stitch regularly
with novelty threads.

Ebay and Facebook market place have a lot of older machines for sale at very good prices. There are a few good online sewing shops like Hobkirks and Frank Nutt who also sell second hand machines and offer servicing of older machines. Picking up a “good runner” is easy. 

Am I too old to learn how to sew?

We are never to old to learn a new skill, this is one for all ages. It takes a bit of time and patience to get to grips with a sewing machine. The feeling one gets when completing a project or gift is great. Giving what you made as a gift is also one of those up lifting moments you will enjoy. 

Selecting the right fabric for your downloadable sewing projects.

There is a tremendous selection  of fabrics available.  As you enter a fabric shop, or online store, the huge variety of colors and splashy prints are the first to catch your eye.  However the fabrics for most of these downloadable sewing tutorials suitable for your project, will be cotton or poly cotton based. The duffel bag can be made out of any curtain type fabric or thin upholstery fabric. Denim can be used but poses problems if your machine can’t sew thick fabrics easily. Left over fabrics from older completed projects can also be used.

Have a look at the download links below and get started with a project. Most of the easy projects don’t need a pattern as you just measure squares or rectangles from your fabric. Patterns are included for you to print off and cut out for use or the tutorial refers to a sewing pattern from one of the main pattern companies.
